Lake Wörthersee

Klagenfurt, Austria

Description:

Lake Wörthersee is the largest lake in Carinthia, which due to its favorable geographical position sometimes warms up to 27 degrees Celsius. The area of the lake is 19.39 square kilometers, it freely extends for 16.5 kilometers, running from east to west. The lake is located in a lowland of picturesque terrain, in the middle of the hills, in the Klagenfurt basin. The area of the Lake Wörthersee basin is 162.1 square kilometers.

The lake is divided into 3 basins with neat islands, one peninsula and several rapids located under water. The lake is fed by various sources, the largest of which is Raifnitzbach. In the east of the lake there are outflows that drain Wörthersee into the Drau River.

Initially, there were three islands in the middle of the lake: the island, located in the eastern bay, was called Maria Loretto, which in 1770 was united by lowering the groundwater level of the Maria Werz peninsula. Also on the lake you can see the islands of Schlangen and Unterdellach.
