Rauenstein Castle
Rauhenstein, 2500 Baden, Austria
Description:
Burgruine Rauhenstein Castle in Baden was built in the 12th century. To date, only ruins remain from the castle, which, nevertheless, are a very interesting sight.
The castle was founded by the Austrian Margrave Babenberg dynasty. According to the stories of the guides, the past of the castle is very dark and foggy – it is said that for a long time it was owned by knights-robbers who kept the local population in fear and robbed the surrounding villages. However, after the outrageous act of the robbers, namely, the captivity of the wife of Emperor Frederick the Third, the patience of the ruler ended: having returned his wife with a fight, he ordered to literally wipe out this “hotbed of crime” from the face of the earth, which was, by the way, near his summer residence.
Despite such a turbulent past, the castle is one of the favorite tourist attractions.
