St. Martin's Tower
Martinsgasse 3b, 6900 Bregenz, Austria
Description:
St. Martin's Tower is the highest architectural monument located in the historical part of Bregenz. Apart from the fact that among all the monuments of the Baroque style it is the oldest, its uniqueness is that in Europe there are no similar buildings. The construction of St. Martin’s Tower began at the end of the XVI century and lasted only a few years. Now on its upper tier there is an observation deck, to which you can climb the stairs.
The history of the tower dates back to the XIV century, but it acquired its modern appearance only in 1602. The architectural appearance of the building traces motifs of Moorish architecture, which is read by the muted tones of the facades and the classical form of Venetian windows. It is simply impossible to pass by this amazing building, crowned with a picturesque wooden dome.
The first floor of the tower of St. Martin is occupied by a medieval chapel, the walls of which are decorated with beautiful Gothic frescoes of the XIV century. Among the images are Jesus, the Virgin, the symbolism of the four evangelical apostles, the statue of St. Martin. The chapel also contains portraits of the Montfort family, who initiated the creation of the chapel. The upper floors of the tower are occupied by a small military museum, the exposition of which presents an interesting selection of samples of weapons.
