City church
Annenstra ß e 4, 8020 Graz, Austria
Description:
If you are planning a train to the amazing Austrian city of Graz, then be sure to pay attention to one of its main attractions – the City Church, built in 1881 by the great architect Georg Hauberriser. The construction of the temple in the classical Baroque style lasted about 6 years. Its consecration took place in June 1891, and as a parish church it began to function only in October 1902.
The church has unique stained glass windows, which are bright representatives of stained glass art in the Baroque style, which are currently very few in Austria. The main attraction of the temple is a wonderful bell tower and a chapel with wall paintings. Unfortunately, during the First World War, all bronze bells were dismantled in order to save money, instead of which ordinary steel bells were installed. Very popular among tourists are magnificent church frescoes created by the famous painter Karl Karger. In 2005 and 2006, the church was overhauled. Now it pleases guests and residents of the city with its internal and external decoration.
