Rigersburg Castle

8333 Riegersburg Austria

Description:

Rigersburg Castle, located 55 kilometers east of the second largest city of Austria Graz, in the fairground village of Feldbach district, dates back to the beginning of the XII century.

This monumental castle, a symbol of Eastern Styria, is located on the remains of a volcanic mountain 482 m high. The huge structure includes three kilometers of massive walls, 11 bastion towers and 7 fortified gates.

In 1637, Riegersburg was given to the Wechsler family. During the war with the Turks in the XVII century, Elizabeth von Wexler single-handedly turned the palace into the famous border fortress of that era. She and her maid Katerina Paldauf are dedicated to the museum “Legendary Liechtenstein – Legendary Women” on the first floor of the castle.

In 1822, the castle passed into the possession of the ancient princely family of Liechtenstein, and to this day the Liechtenstein family devotes all their efforts to continuous restoration work.

Rigersburg has 108 rooms, not all of which are open to the public. The interior decoration of the rooms mainly dates from the XVI-XVII centuries.

In 1987, 20 basements of the castle were given to the exhibition "Witch Museum", which tells about the time of the witch hunt in Styria.

Rigersburg Castle receives visitors daily.
