Cathedral of St. James
Domplatz 6020 Innsbruck, osterreich, 0512 583902
Description:
The Cathedral of St. James was built between 1717 and 1724 on the site of a former Gothic church. The building is made in the Baroque style according to the drawing of the talented architect Johann Jacob Gercomer. The church building was significantly damaged during World War II, but was quickly restored.
The cathedral has a fairly simple facade, on which there are many windows of different shapes. The middle of the building is covered with a large dome, and the side towers, topped with small domes, are decorated with superb clocks. In the center of the roof is an equestrian statue, and under it in a special niche - a magnificent statue of the Virgin Mary and the baby.
The interior was created by famous masters of the Azam brothers. The vault of the church depicts scenes from the life of St. James. The main attraction of the cathedral is the icon “Virgin Mary – Assistant” (artist Lucas Cranach the Elder), which is located in the center of the altar.
In the early nineties of the 20th century, a complete reconstruction of the building was carried out, and since 1993 the cathedral has been open to visitors.
