Alter Platz Square
Alter Platz, 9020 Klagenfurt am Worthersee, Austria
Description:
Alter Platz is the central square of Klagenfurt. It stretches from west to east, from the Landhouse building to Bahnhofstrasse Street.
This square was the first pedestrian square in Austria. It has several historic buildings, cafes and shops. Most of the houses facing the square were built at the beginning of the XVII century. House No. 1 is the palace of the Welzern family, built in 1600 by a Spanish master. In 1739-1918 it housed the city hall. On the facade of the building is an image of Justice. A little further from the Welzern Palace stands No. 4, which was the town hall from 1723 to 1739. In the western part of the square is Landhouse, the seat of the Carinthian government. Several halls are open for free visit, including the Large and Small Stamp Halls.
Shopping enthusiasts will love the shopping passage of Bambergerhof, which is located in a building owned by the Bambergers. Near it stands the Golden Goose House, the oldest surviving building in Klagenfurt, built in 1498.
The square also contains a plague column, on which, after the victory over the Turks in 1683, a cross was added, trampling the crescent moon.
