The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Baumbachstra ß e 5, 4020 Linz, Austria

Description:

The new Cathedral or Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the name of the cathedral located in Linz. It can rightfully bear the title of the largest Catholic cathedral in Austria. Work on the construction of the cathedral began on the initiative of Bishop Franz-Josef Rudigier in 1856 and was completed only in 1924, when the cathedral was finally consecrated.

Despite its impressive size, the New Cathedral is not the tallest religious building in Austria. This is due to the fact that the original design provided for the presence of a very high spire, which was forbidden in those years - no building could exceed the Viennese Cathedral of St. Stephen. In this regard, the height of the spire of the cathedral in Linz was reduced and amounted to 133 meters, which is two meters below the capital's cathedral.

Particularly noteworthy are the magnificent stained-glass windows, most of which contain images of plots from the history of Linz, as well as portraits of benefactors who donated funds for the construction. They were partially damaged during World War II and after restoration were replaced by modern stained glass windows. On the bell tower of the cathedral there are nine bells, some of which date back to the XIX century.
