Linz

Old cathedral

Domgasse, Linz, Austria

Description:

The Alter Dom or Old Cathedral is a curious example of classical Baroque architecture, which arose as a Jesuit church in the late seventeenth century.

The cathedral is also called St. Ignatius Cathedral, it was built in honor of the saint who founded the Jesuit order.

Externally, the cathedral looks quite modest - here you can see two absolutely identical towers and a low dome between them, but inside, visitors see a wonderful luxurious interior. The rich decoration of the interior halls of the cathedral is amazing. The decoration is made using pink marble, the columns are decorated with ornate decorative elements, the temple has many statues and a completely unique altar, which is decorated with marble sculptures.

The architect of the cathedral is Pietro Francesco Carlone. For more than a century, the cathedral was an active city cathedral before the construction of a new cathedral in the city. There was also a college for Jesuit students.
