Grainburg Castle
Greinburg 1, 4360 Grein, Austria
Description:
The medieval castle of Greinburg is one of the main attractions of the Austrian city of Grein, located 60 kilometers southwest of Linz. It is the oldest residential castle in Austria, first mentioned in written sources in 1284. In addition to interesting architecture, the castle is famous for its Museum of Shipping, the only one in Upper Austria.
Over the years, the owners of the castle have changed many times, each of whom sought to bring something new to the architecture. In fact, the castle acquired its modern appearance in 1621, when the most significant changes took place. A vaulted gallery was built, finally decorating the courtyard and giving expressiveness to the three-storey building. In 1625, a knightly hall and chapel in the southwest tower were restored.
Grainburg Castle is a fine example of Renaissance architecture. It is definitely worth visiting for lovers of history and beautiful landscapes - after all, a magnificent view of the Danube and the city stretching at the foot of the castle opens from the territory of the castle.
