This is evidenced by the variety of health sports in Austria, modern and mega-popular ski resorts in Austria, as well as the country’s success in international competitions. The number of Austrians – world and European champions, as well as Olympic medalists is quite high relatively small population. We all know Tony Seiler, Franz Klammer and Herman Mayer – the Austrian champions of the past years. Mountain skiing in Austria as a sport appeared in Austria in the early 20th century. Matthias Zdarski (1856-1940) wrote the first ski guide in 1897. He invented the first specially adapted ski mounts and organized the first slalom competition in 1905. And there is no coincidence that numerous international competitions are held here, in the ski resorts of Austria. The Winter Olympics were held in Innsbruck twice (in 1964 and 1976). The European and World Championships are often held at other Austrian ski resorts such as St. Anton, Kitzbühel, Kaprun and others. Austria has the best ski slopes of the Alps. Many of them are located in Alberg and Tyrol: in St. Anton (where the Alpine World Championships are held), Kitzbühel and St. Critzof, there is also the Ski Academy - a coaching center. The international races in Hanenkamm in Kitzbühel are famous all over the world. In January, there are spectacular mountain and slalom races for the Men’s World Cup. In 1999, the world championship in flat skiing was held in Styria, in the picturesque town of Ramsau. The local glacier – Dachstein – is a popular training ground for skiers from all over the world. Even the national teams of Norway and Finland train here in the summer. Athletes practice technique and develop endurance directly in bathing suits. This resort is also famous for its skiing for nudists. Two stages of the Four Swimming Tour, the prestigious ski jumping competition, are held in Innsbruck and Bischofshofen. They take place in the last week of December – the first week of January. Eight glaciers in Austria allow you to ski all year round. The most popular glaciers are located above Kaprun and Stubai. Current information on snow cover and the operation of approximately 3,500 ski lifts is available on the Alpine Association website.
