Villa Hermes Museum
Lainzer Tiergarten, Ober Sankt Veit, 1130 Vienna, Austria
About the company:
The museum with the romantic name "Villa Hermes" is located in a picturesque place, where the imperial hunting grounds used to stretch, and nowadays a zoo is located. The museum occupies the premises of the so-called "Dream Palace". This definition of the palace was given by Empress Elizabeth, for whom this palace became a gift of her husband, Emperor Franz Joseph. According to his plan, the magnificent palace was supposed to detain the lover of traveling Elizabeth in Vienna.
The construction of the palace took more than five years, and as a result, a real masterpiece was created, which became a model of country villas for the highest nobility. The villa got its name from the statue of the ancient messenger of the gods Hermes located in the garden. The exposition, located on the first floor of the palace, includes numerous documents, photographs, drawings and plans and documents from the time of the construction of the palace complex. The personal belongings of the emperor and empress are stored here, allowing the visitor to get an idea of the life of monarchs away from official etiquette.
Luxury interiors literally amaze the imagination. What is only the bedroom of the Empress with a huge bed of the XVII century of the time of Maria Theresa, frescoes based on Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. The decoration of the palace was attended by the best artists of their time, who managed to harmoniously fit it into the surrounding landscape. All this makes Villa Hermes a truly unique place.
