Salzburg

Excursion to Salzburg (by train)

Description:

In Salzburg, I will give you a 2.5-hour walking tour of the historic part of the city, which is all listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

During this tour you will see almost all the main attractions, such as: *Park Mirabel - the former summer residence of the rulers of this city, princes-archbishops; * Church of St. George. Trinity, the house where the Mozart family lived * the house where the great physicist Christian Doppler was born * the house in which the famous conductor of our time Herbert von Karajan was born and lived

Crossing the bridge over the river Salzakh we get to the old part of the city, where we see:

* the building of the central festival hall of Salzburg; * the famous all over Europe alley Getreidergasse, on which stands the house where Mozart was born; * look at the luxurious facade in the Rococo style of the town hall on the old market square; * look at the oldest Salzburg house with a width of 1 meter and look at the "court pharmacy", with preserved decoration of the XVI century.

Then along the "Jewish Lane" we will come to Mozart Square, in the center of which there is a monument to the composer himself, looking at the Church of St. Michael - the oldest parish church in the city.

Next, we see another wonderful square – the Residence Square with its luxurious fountain – the largest Baroque fountain outside Italy.

The boundaries of the square are the buildings of the Old and New residences of the Salzburg princes-archbishops. Let’s go to the courtyard of the “old” residence: the “grotto of Hercules” will not leave you indifferent.

Directly from the courtyard of the residence, we get to the Cathedral Square: in the center is the column of Our Lady, and behind it the main cathedral of Salzburg, first built in the VI century. We will go into it and inspect the cold decoration in the style of “Northern Baroque”, there is a font in which Mozart was baptized.

Another wonderful square on our way is Kapitelplatz. Here and the fountain of Neptune – a place where once watered the horses of the princes of the archbishops of Salzburg, and the mysterious “Sphere” – an example of modern sculpture and, of course, a beautiful view of the fortress of Hohensalzburg – a symbol of this city. A fortress with which there are many legends.

The oldest cemetery in Austria, where many famous citizens rest and located at the foot of the mountain, in the catacombs of which the first Christians lived, we will not pass by.

This city began with the Monastery of St. Peter, now the oldest active male monastery in the north of the Alps. The monastery courtyard, the luxurious Baroque monastery church, as well as the oldest restaurant in Europe, we will also see.

Salzburg has always been one of the centers of Catholicism in Europe, the refuge of various monastic orders. Franciscan monks built here a very interesting church in its variety of architectural styles, we will visit it with you.

On the city market square, you can try the “brand dishes” of local alpine cuisine: fruit bread, smoked lard and mountain cheese.

After the tour, you can dine at a traditional Austrian restaurant in the city center.
