St Erhard's Church

Nonntaler Hauptstrasse 11, Salzburg, Austria

Description:

Erhardkirche or the Roman Catholic Church of Erhard is located in the historic center of Salzburg. The temple, built in the XV century, previously belonged to the hospital at the monastery of Nonnberg, the oldest female monastery north of the Alps. Today it is a parish church consecrated in honor of St. Erhard, the patron saint of the sick and the poor. In 1603 he bought a hospital and ordered to change the appearance of the chapel. According to the project of the architect Giovanni Gaspare Zucalle, the facade was rebuilt in the Italian Baroque style.

In the central part rises the dominant dome, inside which is built a small lantern. Nearby stands the bell tower, the oldest bell of which dates back to 1686. At the eastern entrance there is a small fountain with the figure of a lion gargoyle. For a long time, the water in the fountain was considered healing because there was a belief that the church was built on the site of the holy spring, which was discovered by St. Erhard himself.
