St. Margaret's Chapel

St. Peter Bezirk 5, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

Description:

One of the most interesting attractions of Salzburg is the cemetery at the monastery of St. Peter with its picturesque fences and tombstones of wrought iron. Many of the names engraved on the plates are known throughout the world, and the appearance of the cemetery has remained unchanged since 1627. In the center of the cemetery is the chapel of St. Margaret.

The small chapel is made in the late Gothic style, its interior space consists of only one hall. The building, which appears to many tourists and residents of Salzburg, was built in 1485-1491, but it was preceded by an earlier building. During archaeological excavations in the chapel were found fragments of the chapel of St. Amanda, which previously stood on this site.

The architecture of the chapel is very picturesque. Special attention deserves ribbed internal vault and carved wooden altar, located between two openwork colored windows. It was installed in 1864, and its main decoration is the statue of the Madonna, made in the late Gothic style. The earliest elements of the decoration of the chapel are the window on the choirs and another small altar. The outer wall of the chapel contains tombstones with the names of abbots and nobles.
