Evangelical parish church of Christ

Schwarzstrasse 25, Salzburg, Austria

Description:

The Evangelical Parish Church of Christ in Salzburg belongs to the Evangelical Church in Austria. The parish was founded in 1863 and today has about 4,500 members, the largest Protestant church in western Austria. Most of the parishioners are Lutherans and reformers. The parish organizes many events for people of all ages and interests: children’s holidays and youth festivals, educational programs, various events for the elderly.

When Martin Luther began his Reformation in the sixteenth century, many people in Salzburg became Protestants, even though it was forbidden. For several centuries, the ruler of the country were Catholics and Catholicism was recognized as the official and only religion. For some time in the city and surroundings managed to secretly profess Protestantism, but in 1731 began mass persecution. Today, the situation in the city is completely different. The Evangelical Church of Christ was visited with worship by Pope John Paul II, which demonstrates good relations with the Roman Catholic Church.
