Mount Mönchsberg

mount Menchsberg, Salzburg

Description:

Mount Mönchsberg, 540 meters above sea level, is located in the city of Salzburg and is one of its five peaks. It separates from the modern city the old part of Salzburg, located on the left bank of the Salzach River. On one side, Menchsberg is covered with forest, on the other it hangs with a rocky side above the road. This is a popular place for walking with citizens. In addition to the beautiful view of the city from its top and clean air, Mount Mönchsberg attracts by the accessibility of the climb: you can climb to the top by elevator. The elevator tunnel is one of the oldest in Europe. It is pierced right into the rock in 1767.

There are several interesting buildings on Mönchsberg. Johanneschloss is a small castle, which at different times was part of the monastery, educational building and hostel. Built approximately in the XIV century, the name of the first owner of the castle is unknown. Marketenderschloss is a small and inconspicuous castle, not popular with tourists. In the Middle Ages there were barracks, and now there is a training center inside. Schloss Menchstein was formerly the building of the University of Salzburg and now houses a hotel. Since 2004, the Museum of Modern Art has been operating on Mönchsberg Mountain.
