Salzburg City Hall

Kranzlmarkt 1, Salzburg, Austria

Description:

Salzburg City Hall is one of the main historical monuments of the city. It is located on the main and most beloved tourist street Getraydegasse. As in the Middle Ages, today the elegant four-story building is the seat of the Mera and the seat of the city council. Locals call it the Old Town Hall, the main composition of the municipal administration is located in the Mirabel Castle.

The statue of Justice above the entrance to the building was erected in the XV century, when the city council received the status of a judicial body. In the darkest times of the Middle Ages, numerous death sentences were handed down in the town hall for involvement in witchcraft. If you get to one of the excursions, you can find out by what criteria the city council defined a witch in a woman. The town hall tower was used as a watch post from which observation was conducted. In the XVI century, a bell tower and a large clock appeared on the building - the first in the city. The clock movement for this watch is considered to be the oldest operating in Austria.

There are several shops on the ground floor of the town hall, and the former conference room is used for modern city exhibitions. Near the town hall is an excellent open summer cafe.
