Mirabel Palace Park
Description:
Mirabel Palace is one of the most romantic stories of Austria. It was built in 1606 by Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Reitenau for Salome’s merchant daughter Alt, who was his mistress. The man in love built a huge magnificent palace in the Baroque style, and next to it he ordered to break the magnificent Mirabell gardens with fountains and sculptures.
The oldest part of the park is called the Grand Parterre, which houses statues of ancient Roman gods. Another part of the park is called the garden of dwarfs, where grotesque sculptures are located in deep niches and just on pedestals. The entrance to this part of the park is blocked by three-meter forged gates, on the sides of which there are two stone sculptures of lions. In the western part of the park there is a living plant labyrinth.
Today, the Mirabel Palace houses the Salzburg mayor’s office and the city administration, and the nearby gardens were chosen by tourists and locals. Newlyweds consider it a good tradition to walk in the park and take pictures.
