Description:
The pilgrimage church of Maria Plain since the XVIII century is a famous place of pilgrimage. The charm of the place has attracted pilgrims for centuries. The history of the Church of Mary dates back to the Thirty Years’ War. The miraculous icon “Our Lady with Child”, the work of an unknown artist, miraculously survived a fire in the Bavarian city? intact. It was taken to Grimming from Plainberg near Salzburg in 1652, where it was kept in a wooden chapel.
Thanks to the constant influx of pilgrims, a copy of the painting was made and put on public display in the new chapel. The church was built according to the plans of Giovanni Antonio Dario and consecrated on August 12, 1674. The icon was returned to Salzburg two years later.
The church was built three-storey, with two towers of the facade. Maria Plain can be seen from afar. The church is richly decorated with gold, as well as blue and white colors. Powerful statues of saints stand guard between pairs of columns that are crowned with wreaths. The miraculous image is the central altar.
