Old Town of Salzburg
Description:
The historic center of Salzburg, the Old Town, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is one of the most visited tourist places in Salzburg. Sometimes the narrow streets of the city are so crowded that it becomes difficult to pass, but all the inconveniences are fully paid off by impressions of local architecture. Almost every trend in the architecture of old Europe – Romanticism, Renaissance, Baroque – left traces in this place.
The old town hides between the rocks of Mönchsberg and Festunberg on the left bank of the Salzach River. One of the most beautiful and popular streets is Getraidegasse (“Grain Lane”). On the street is the City Hall, several authentic cafes, the Mozart Museum in the house No. 9, where he was born.
The most interesting thing here is the signs that scatter on every house. They say that among them there are gilded. From Getraydegasse depart no less interesting Goldgasse (“Golden Lane”) and Judengasse (“Jewish Lane”). Nearby is the Salzburg Cathedral. Opposite it is the house where Mozart lived, and next to it is the Salzburg Museum. And above all this beauty stands the fortress of Hohensalzburg.
