Salzburg cathedral

Domplatz 1A, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

Description:

Salzburg Cathedral is not only a monument of history and the tomb of archbishops, but also the largest temple of the city. Located in the center of Salzburg, it is world famous not only for its outstanding parameters and architecture, but also for its huge organ with 4,000 pipes. The height of the Cathedral is 76 meters, and inside it can be simultaneously 10 thousand believers.

The history of the cathedral goes back to the end of the VIII century, when the original temple appeared on this place, which in 1181-1200 replaced the church in the late Romanesque style. A strong fire that broke out in 1598 destroyed the cathedral, and the archbishop initiated the construction of a new cathedral. Due to the difficult political situation, construction work was delayed and was completed only in 1628. This building, designed by an Italian architect, has survived several wars and restorations.

The facade of the majestic building is lined with marble and has two symmetrical towers. The interior space is decorated in the Baroque style and amazes with luxury and wealth. The walls are decorated with magnificent frescoes, many of which are made by Florentine masters. One of the relics is the bronze font, in which in 1756 the young Mozart was baptized, and in the underground chapel archaeologists found fragments of the ancient Romanesque church that preceded the cathedral. At the cathedral there is a museum, which presents the main treasures of the cathedral.
