Hohenwerfen Castle
Burgstrasse 2, Werfen, Austria
Description:
Hohenwerfen Castle is located near the Austrian city of Werfen. This is Salzburg. It was built on a hill 155 meters high and had a defensive value for the main city of the land - Salzburg. The castle looks like a completely impregnable fortress, thanks to its convenient location between the hills, the overgrown forest and the Salzach River.
The construction of the castle began in the XI century under Prince Gebhard of Salzburg, then the castle was rebuilt many times, strengthened and expanded its territory. With threats of attack, new thick walls were built in the castle and special artillery recesses were made.
Hohenwerfen Castle many times changed its owners, sold and bought, fell into the hands of the French Napoleonic army, burned. Finally, in the XX century, after almost fifty years of being used as a training camp for the local police, it received the status of a museum.
The castle can be reached by car and funicular, from which you can see just stunning views of the castle and the landscape around.
