Mauterndorf Castle

Burg Mauterndorf, 5570 Mauterndorf, Austria

Description:

In 1023, everything that was surrounded by the castle was given to the Bishop of Salzburg. In the XIII century, a tax settlement was established. They were taken from merchants who were crossing the Alps to Italy. This place was given the name Mauterndorf.

In 1253, the construction of the castle began as a defense against invasions of enemy lands. In its first form, the castle appeared as a 4-storey building, including fortress walls and a prison. After a while, turrets and another fortress wall were built to the castle. Over the next century, it was repeatedly expanded and decorated inside. The walls were decorated with frescoes and coats of arms.

At the beginning of the XIX century, the castle was transferred to state ownership. But it was soon bought by Berlin doctor Hermann von Epenstein. After the doctor's death, his widow gave the castle to Hermann Goering.

In 1968, the palace was re-owned by the city and now operates as a museum. The rooms inside the building are very richly decorated with stucco. And the chapel belonging to Henry the second is decorated with frescoes of the XIV century, which depict the coronation of the Virgin Mary.
