Hallein Salt Mine
Ramsaustrasse 3, 5422 Hallein, Austria
Description:
Hallein salt mine, located a few kilometers south of Salzburg, is one of the most popular attractions. The place where salt mining was carried out in ancient times was transformed into a tourist route in 2005. You can get here on foot directly from the center of Hallein, or go by funicular.
Each visitor to the salt mines at the entrance must change into a special white hood, then all sit in a special train that will take travelers deep into the mountain. The journey begins with a narrow shaft where one must be extremely careful not to get injured. From the first minutes, the pictures that open to the eyes are literally fascinating, but the most interesting begins further.
At the beginning of the tour, a film is shown telling about the extraction of salt during the time of the Celts, who many centuries ago became the founders of the fishery. And millions of years ago, this area was flooded by ocean waters, and these times are evidenced by the huge amount of salt left in the rocky dungeon. Gradually, the ancient peoples realized the benefits of salt and began to extract it. The plots of the hard work of miners are shown in one of the side galleries. Descending even lower, under the ground, visitors to the cave are underground, almost on the border of Austria and Germany, where there is an underground lake. On the lake you can swim on a wooden ferry and get a lot of impressions.
