National Salvation Day of Azerbaijan
Description:
There was a crisis of power in Azerbaijan. In the young republic, there was a struggle for leadership between individuals and groups. After coming to power on May 14, 1992, the Popular Front from the first day of its unhealthy activities showed a complete inability to govern the country.
In the summer of 1993, there was a real threat of civil war in Azerbaijan. On a difficult day for the Motherland, the Popular Front invited the outstanding son of Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev, to Baku from Nakhchivan. Having accepted the persistent invitations of the people and the leadership of the country, Heydar Aliyev arrived in Baku on June 9.
In a very short time, Heydar Aliyev was able to prevent a civil war in Azerbaijan.
On June 15, 1993, Heydar Aliyev was elected Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Thus, July 15 entered our history as National Salvation Day.
At the request of the people, the Milli Majlis (Parliament) declared this day a holiday in June 1997.
