Of course, when studying the history of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, one should avoid a one-sided approach to historical facts and events, beware of the tendency to absolutize, avoid extremes in assessing the activities of the state. The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, inseparably linked with the national liberation movement, was its natural result. In the new historical conditions, it demonstrated its commitment to the implementation of the epochal tasks set before it and achieved significant achievements along the way.
For the first time, the establishment and activity of the Democratic Republic showed the world the independence of Azerbaijan, the realization of the freedom-loving aspirations of the Azerbaijani people, who are closely connected with their statehood.
The national liberation movement that expanded in Azerbaijan at the beginning of the XX century was strongly influenced by the ideas of national consolidation, freedom and unity of the Turkic world. Compared to the pro-Islamic tendencies and slogans, the Turkic orientation in public thought increasingly took up. The leaders of the national movement, based on the historical and cultural traditions of the Azerbaijani people, developed as the ideology of this movement the doctrine of Azerbaijaniism, which absorbed both Eastern ideas about the rational structure of society and Western cultural and democratic values.
The ideological evolution of the Azerbaijani national movement, its commitment to national spiritual traditions and new historical values are reflected in the symbolism of the Azerbaijani flag.
