Museum of petroglyphs in Gobustan

Description:

The museum of petroglyphs - the so-called Gobustan - is a mountainous place located at a distance of 60 km from Baku. It was here that ancient sites of primitive people were found, who left behind a lot of rock images - petroglyphs.
These primitive monuments of art reflect the culture, economy, worldview, customs and traditions of ancient people. Once the sea splashed right at the foot of these mountains, but then retreated, leaving on the polished domed rocks characteristic relief marks. After, quite by chance, in the 30s of the XX century, unusual drawings on the rocks were discovered, more than 10 thousand of them were revealed. Also found ancient primitive dwellings - caves and parking lots, more than 100 thousand items of material culture. Gobustan petroglyphs belong to different epochs. They mainly date from the periods X - XVIII thousand BC to the Middle Ages AD. But scientists suggest that among these drawings there are more ancient, more than 20 thousand years BC. From these ancient drawings, one can clearly trace the entire evolution of the intelligent man. Here are scenes of hunting a mountain goat, ritual dances with spears - this is perhaps the most ancient period of time, the Mesolithic era. Here appeared images of horse and foot hunting, battle scenes, scenes of collective labor, harvest, women at the hearth. This is already the first centuries of our era – the transition to a new level of social order. Closer to the Middle Ages, the drawings decrease in size, become more schematic. Rock paintings forever captured the drawings of animals that lived here for the last 10 thousand years - jairans, wild goats, deer, wild pigs, horses, lions, etc. There are also images of birds, fish, snakes, lizards and insects. Among the many drawings, images of boats with rowers attract attention, indicating that the ancient settlers were good seafarers. These images interested the famous scientist and world-famous traveler Thor Heyerdahl, who visited here several times.
Since 1966, the territory of Gobustan has been declared a reserve. Today it is a real open-air museum. Every year this stone art gallery is visited by thousands of people from all over the world.
