According to scientists, mud volcanoes appeared on the territory of the present Azerbaijan Republic more than 25 million years ago. By their origin, they are associated with oil and gas fields. Rich deposits of gas condensate and oil were found on the sites of mud volcanoes.
In the territory of Azerbaijan from 1810 to the present, about 200 major eruptions have occurred from at least 50 volcanoes. As a rule, the eruption of mud volcanoes is accompanied by an underground hum and strong explosions. From the deep layers of the earth, gases come out and immediately ignite. The height of the flame above the volcano can reach up to 1000 meters (Garasu volcano). A volcano called Touragai from 1841 to 1950-th year erupted as much as 6 times.
NASA geologists who studied the nature of Mars, made a rather bold conclusion that the mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan are very similar in structure to the elevations of the red planet.
On September 15, 2004, the largest mud volcano in the world, located on the territory of Azerbaijan, entered the Guinness Book of Records.
