The Sacred Lights of Absheron

Description:

Since ancient times, Azerbaijan is known as the Land of Lights. Especially the Absheron Peninsula was famous for its inextinguishable fires, which made an indelible impression on ancient people. These places, where oil oozes out of the ground and natural gas breaks out in burning torches, have always attracted fire worshippers from all over the world. In such places, our ancestors later erected their temple buildings, bringing fire to stands in the form of altars, or in special niches, or on the roofs of their religious buildings. In Iran and Azerbaijan, such temples were called Ateshgah, which means “place of fire” or “house of fire”.

Azerbaijan is one of the few places on earth where you can still see elements of the preserved fire cult and the ancient religion of Zoroastrianism. One of these temples of fire, recreated in the 18th century by Hindu-Shaivists, has survived in its original form to the present day. It is located 20 km from Baku in one of the Absheron villages of Surakhany. The inextinguishable lights of Absheron and the Temple of Fire Worshippers considered it their duty to visit all travelers, scientists, artists, researchers from Europe and Russia who visited Baku at different periods. Among them are the German traveler Kempfer (17th century), Russian scientists Lerch and Gmelin (18th century), the famous chemist D. I. Mendeleev, the French writer Alexander Dumas father, Russian artists Bogolyubov and Gagarin and even the Russian emperor Alexander the third visited this place when he came to visit the Baku province. Today, this exotic sight of Baku again attracts tourists and is open to visit. Ateshgah Temple is a unique masterpiece of ancient architecture.

Our tour includes a visit to this sacred place, as well as Mount Yanardag, which is famous for its inextinguishable lights and is included in the list of 80 modern wonders of the world.

During the tour, I will also tell you about fire worship and the first state religion of the three Iranian empires - Zoroastrianism, which dominated the territory of modern Azerbaijan for almost a thousand years until the advent of Islam.
