Thematic excursion to Gobustan "Journey to the Stone Age"
Description:
Auto excursion duration of 3.5 - 4 hours. It is possible to drive to Mud Volcanoes in the village of Alat, in the summer on one of the beaches, as well as in the most popular fish restaurant among Baku residents on the coast.
From Azerbaijani "Gobustan" is translated as "Edge of ravines" ("gobu" - "trench, ravine, well", "stan" - "edge, earth").
Monuments of Gobustan are divided into two groups: rock paintings and ancient sites. In the mountains of Gobustan, under the names Beyukdash, Kichikdash, evidence of the inhabitants of the region of the Stone Age and subsequent periods is concentrated - rock paintings, human parking, tombstones, etc. There are also remains of a large prehistoric cromlech, which are clearly traced.
According to Thor Heyerdahl, who visited here more than once, Gobustan Petroglyphs is one of the best rock collections in the world in terms of covering such a large historical period. Images from different eras are so diverse in style, themes and technique that it seems to be a textbook on rock painting. It is also surprising that over time, later drawings were superimposed on earlier ones, as if artists from different eras were competing in craftsmanship.
Gobustan is a real museum of petroglyphs, which, as an encyclopedia of the development of mankind, unfolds true stories from the lives of people who have inhabited the fertile land of Azerbaijan since ancient times.
Today it is a real open-air museum. Every year this stone art gallery is visited by thousands of people from all over the world.
