Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
ooh Orujeva 2A, AZ1110 Baku, Azerbaijan
Description:
The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baku is the only Catholic church in Azerbaijan that continues to function as a religious building where services are held. To date, this new building is very strange, unusual for the temple form. Its construction was completed only in 2006, the project belongs to the Italian Paolo Ruggero.
The history of this temple, or rather, its predecessor, which occupied this place, began with a small chapel, which in 1909-1912 was turned into a full-fledged stone temple. But, as was often the case with religious buildings under Soviet rule, the church was completely destroyed by the Bolsheviks in 1938. By erecting a church with an old name on the same site, the Catholic community did not try to give it the appearance of the previous church. It was decided to follow a more modern design.
At the moment, the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is functioning, services are held in it. Above the entrance to the temple is a statue of the Most Holy Virgin, created by Azerbaijani sculptors. The church can accommodate 200 parishioners at a time.
It is said that the construction of the temple could be started only thanks to the arrival of Pope John Paul II in Baku in 2002.
