Church of the Saviour

May 28, 13, Baku, Azerbaijan

Description:

The Church of the Savior in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, is better known to locals as the Lutheran Church. This evangelical-Lutheran church was erected on May 28 (then Telephone Street) in 1896-1899. The land for the construction of the building with an area of 6373 square meters was transferred by the City Duma to the Lutheran community. The project of the neo-Gothic building belongs to the German Adolf Eichler, who was inspired by the Church of St. George. Elizabeth in Marburg.

On the spire of the building was installed a heavy, prominent from afar gilded cross weighing 213 kilograms. Organ music concerts were often held in the church. In Soviet times, the church experienced its darkest times. The Lutheran community was liquidated in 1936 and the church was demolished. She was saved by an unusual situation related to the murder of Sergei Kirov. The sculptor needed a large space to create a monument to Kirov, and he asked for a church for this.

Now the surviving church has been restored, but as a temple is no longer used. In recent decades, it has functioned as a concert hall of chamber and organ music at the Philharmonic, as well as a concert hall of the Ministry of Culture. You can listen to organ music here, just like you did a hundred years ago.
