Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator

Corner of Mirza Ibragimov and Nizami streets, Baku, Azerbaijan

Description:

The Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator is a famous Armenian temple, originally belonging to the Armenian Apostolic Confession. It was built in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, in 1887. The building is built in the Armenian traditional style, characterized by rigor and consistency of forms. The church itself is small, the most noticeable part of it is a high bell tower, located slightly on the side.

Since 1990, the Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator ceased to function as a temple. In 2004, the church was completely renovated with state funds, but religious services have not resumed. At the moment, a cross has been removed from its dome, and the building itself is used as a library of the Office of the Presidential Office. Thus, the church continues to exist as the president’s book depository. However, visitors can still enjoy its magnificent exterior.
