Lokbatan mud volcano
Lokbatan village near Baku, Absheron Peninsula, Azerbaijan
Description:
The world’s largest mud volcano Lokbatan is located in Azerbaijan, near the village of the same name near Baku. In total, there are about 800 such volcanoes in the world, and about 300 of them are located in this country. It is the Lokbatan volcano that Azerbaijan owes the discovery of its rich oil and gas fields. After all, it was the study of its geology that allowed scientists in 1933, drilling a well near Lockbatan, to discover these natural treasures. But before it was believed that mud volcanoes are in no way associated with hydrocarbon deposits and will not help to find them.
Lokbatan is a very active volcano, the penultimate time it made itself felt as recently as 2010, and before that, over the past century and a half, it has been activated 22 times.
A new eruption occurred in 2012, when a huge glow appeared over the village of Lokbatan, and after a fire from the volcano, mud fell, which spread over more than 2 hectares. It is quite difficult to witness this extraordinary spectacle, but even staying near the volcano, which can "revive" literally at any minute, is very exciting and leaves vivid memories.
