Cathedral of the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women
Red East, 126, Baku, Azerbaijan
Description:
The Cathedral of the Holy Myronbearing Women in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, has undergone several global reconstructions, visited not only the role of a Russian Orthodox cathedral, but also a warehouse and a gymnasium in Soviet times. The cathedral was built in 1909, its original appearance did not differ from other typical military temples. The construction was sponsored by the War Ministry, the funds of philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev were also used.
Initially, a wooden church building was built on the present site, which later turned into a stone cathedral. In 1920, the temple was closed, and in 1990 the building was partially destroyed by two shells. Reconstruction lasted several years, the interior acquired a carved stone iconostasis, and the walls and dome were painted with thematic images. The temple is open to the public.
The Cathedral of the Holy Myron-Bearing Women presents a special attraction for tourists and pilgrims as a repository of several important Christian relics. This is a piece of the relics of St. Bartholomew, patron of Baku, which in 2003 was granted to the church by Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople. Also here you can see the famous icons of the Mother of God, “Caspian” and “Tikhvin”.
