Bibi-Heybat Mosque
Salyan Highway and Namig Guliyev Street, Bibi Heybat, Baku, Azerbaijan
Description:
Bibi-Eybat Mosque, the pearl of Bibi-Eybat complex, is located on the shores of Baku Bay in Azerbaijan. It was rebuilt almost from scratch only in 1998-1999. The majestic, historically valuable building of the original mosque, originally built in the XIII century, was blown up by the Bolsheviks in 1936. The reconstruction was carried out in the most thorough manner, based on photographs and records of travelers, architects and writers.
The first Shiite mosque was erected over the tomb of the daughter of the famous Imam Musa al-Qazim. Ukeima Khanum, like her father, descended from the Prophet Muhammad, as read a large inscription in the tomb. Now the complex includes not only a mosque, but also the graves and tombs of other great people of the country.
The architecture of the reconstructed mosque is built on the basis of the Azerbaijani Shebeke technology, which corresponds to the original design of the building. Everything was done according to the canon of this school: the scale of the building, three domes of a characteristic corrugated shape, as in the old Bibi-Eybat mosque, two minarets. Inside, the building is decorated with turquoise mirrors and golden quotes from the Koran.
