Old Town of Icheri Sheher

Icheri Sheher, which translates as “old city”, is the heart of the capital of Azerbaijan. The place is also called the Acropolis of Baku.

The old town in its old buildings and ruins hides centuries of history. Archaeological excavations carried out here have found tombs of the Bronze Age. In this place there are ancient buildings dating from the XI century: Sonyk-Kala Minaret, Mosque, Shirvanshahs Palace, Maiden Tower, Juma Mosque. There are also modern shops where you can buy handmade souvenirs.

Many tourists note that cats in Baku are very much loved: this is evidenced by the attitude of residents to cats on the street, as well as the presence of many monuments and images in the city. On the wall of one of the houses you can see a monument to cats. In the palace of the Shirvanshahs there is a sculpture “The Writer with Cats”.

Icheri Sheher is famous for the fact that the Soviet films “The Diamond Arm” and “Amphibian Man” were shot here.
