Baku

The edge of mud volcanoes

Description:

Mud volcanoes of Gobustan are one of the most amazing natural phenomena in Azerbaijan. Just an hour’s drive from Baku, you will enter a world resembling the surface of another planet. Here, among the lifeless hills, the earth literally “breathes”, releasing cold mud to the surface, which gurgles, bubbles and slowly flows down the slopes of volcanoes. This is a sight that cannot be forgotten!

Azerbaijan ranks first in the world in the number of mud volcanoes. More than 350 of the 1,100 known volcanoes are located here, and most of them are in Gobustan. The largest concentration of volcanoes is in the Gobustan Reserve, where, in addition to this miracle of nature, you can see ancient petroglyphs applied to the rocks thousands of years ago.

Visiting mud volcanoes is a real adventure. The road to them lies through the desert plains. There is no asphalt, and many tourists transfer to old Soviet cars, which perfectly cope with the local off-road. This adds a special flavor to the trip - a trip through bumps and bumps on the "six" or "Niva" becomes a separate entertainment.

On the site you will find an unusual sight - small volcanic hills, from which gray-brown mud slowly flows. Volcanoes can be of different sizes, from small hills to real giants like the Toragai volcano, 400 meters high. Despite their external “harmlessness”, these volcanoes can erupt and even ignite, as methane is released from the ground.

If you want to feel like a real explorer, do not forget to touch the volcanic mud! It is cold and thick, and also has healing properties. Many tourists bring it into bottles. But be prepared - the dirt is sticky and is washed with difficulty, so it is better to have a supply of water for cleaning.

Make a trip to Gobustan at least half a day. This place will give you a unique experience that is difficult to find anywhere else in the world. And to make your trip more comfortable and exciting, use the services of a local guide Lia Mirieva. It organizes excursions not only to volcanoes, but also to any corners of amazing Azerbaijan.
