Gobustan and Mud Volcanoes: Ancient History and Landscapes on Mars

Just an hour’s drive from Baku is a completely different world: stone evidence of ancient life and unusual natural landscapes that look more like another planet.

This is a route that combines history, nature and sensations that are difficult to compare with something familiar.

What you'll see:

Gobustan is an open-air museum. One of the most important archaeological complexes in the region. More than 6,000 rock paintings up to 10,000 years old have been preserved here.

You will walk along the rocks with petroglyphs, see scenes of hunting, rituals, boats and everyday life of ancient people. I’ll explain how to “read” these images and what they really mean.

Mud volcanoes. A rare natural phenomenon: instead of lava - cold clay, instead of fire - quiet gurgling of the earth.

We will get as close as possible to the craters, go upstairs and see these unusual landscapes.

The place really resembles the Martian surface - especially in cloudy weather.

Interactive Museum (optional) A modern space with 3D models, layouts and archaeological finds. It allows us to better understand how people lived in the prehistoric period.
