Red Bridge

khrami river, road from Ganja to Tbilisi, border of Azerbaijan and Georgia

Description:

The Red Bridge is an ancient red brick bridge that runs exactly between the borders of Azerbaijan and Georgia, and connects them along the Temple River. The dates of construction of the Red Bridge refer to the XVII century, although on this place there was already an ancient bridge built in the XII century. Some scholars say that the current Red Bridge was built in the XII century, as in its architectural style there are many details characteristic of the famous Khudaferin bridges. Now this bridge is considered a national monument of Azerbaijan.

The bridge is quite long - it stretches over the river for 175 meters, in the central part of its width is 4.3 meters, and at the entrances - twice as much - 12.4 meters.

A road runs through the bridge between the cities of Ganja and Tbilisi. It was fully functional until 1998, when a modern wide bridge was built nearby to meet current needs. Until 2006, the bridge and its surroundings were used for a large market created by Georgian Azerbaijanis of the nearby city. Then the market closed.

Georgia and Azerbaijan are negotiating the restoration of the bridge, which is of historical and architectural importance for both countries.
