Upper Mosque of Gevhar-Agi

Meidan Quarter, Shusha, Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, Azerbaijan

Description:

The upper mosque of Gevhar-Agi began to be built in the city of Shusha, now located on the territory of the unrecognized Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, in 1768. Other well-known names of the mosque are Juma Mosque Gevhar-aghi, or Cathedral Mosque. Ibrahim Khan ordered the construction. But the barely begun construction due to circumstances was frozen for many years, until Gevhar-aga, the heiress of Ibrahim Khan, completed the construction with the help of the architect Kerbalai Sefi Khan Karabaga.

The interior of the mosque is not much different from other religious buildings of Karabakh architecture of that period. There are two-storey galleries, separated by high stone columns, as well as traditional dome ceilings.

Like many important architectural monuments, the mosque suffered in 1992 when Nagorno-Karabakh took control of the city of Shusha. Its cladding, pediment and external elements were partially destroyed. But in 2007, restoration work began, and in 2011 it was decided to completely reconstruct it. At the moment, the building is available for external inspection as an architectural monument, but as a mosque does not function.
