Fort Riff

Manama, Bahrain

Description:

Fort Riff, which can rightly be called an interesting attraction of Manama, is located closer to the urban outskirts. This fort, together with the forts of Qalat al-Bahrain and Arad, belongs to the system of defensive structures of ancient Manama.

In previous centuries, Manama was not the capital of Bahrain, but it was an important strategic location. Since the city was once invaded by the Portuguese and then by the Persians, the need to build fortresses was inevitable. The role of defensive fortification was honorably performed by Fort Riff, built in the XVII century.

Modern Fort Riff is a vast desert square under the fortress walls, and the walls themselves still amaze with their power. Unfortunately, some parts of the fortress have already begun to collapse, but this does not prevent tourists from considering Fort Riff, one of the most beautiful architectural attractions in Manama. From the walls of this fortress there are breathtaking views of the city quarters, which the fort seems to protect until now. In the fort itself there is a historical museum.
