Al Hamis Mosque
Description:
Al-Hamis Mosque is considered the first mosque in Bahrain, built in the Umayyad era by Caliph Umar II. However, a study by Al-Jordanian journalist Kassim Hussein, as well as a number of other authoritative sources, argue that the mosque was built in a later era, during the reign of the Uyunids with one minaret. The second was built two centuries later during the reign of the Usfurids. The twin minarets are an ancient monument of Islamic culture.
The Al-Hamis Mosque is considered one of the oldest mosques in the region, an analysis of the stone slabs lying in its foundation suggests that the mosque was built as early as 692 BC. However, found inscriptions say that the construction was carried out much later - in the XI century. And in the XIV and XV centuries, the mosque was twice rebuilt - it was then that minarets were built. Partial reconstruction of the Al-Hamis Mosque has been carried out recently.
