Modern as a Style in the Architecture of Antwerp of the Belle Epoch
Description:
Individual sightseeing walking tour of architectural monuments. Zurenborg is the Golden Triangle in Art Nouveau style.
The successive periods of the city’s heyday and decline have left their mark on Antwerp’s architecture, and this is clearly seen in a bizarre mix of artistic styles from the Middle Ages to Art Nouveau. The Late Tower of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Antwerp dominates the historic center of the city, but this is far from its only gem.
On the tour you will see:
- The Golden Triangle is Cogels Osylei, Waterloostraat and Transvaalstraat. Built mainly between 1890 and 1906, it boasts a number of extraordinary mixed-style mansions, traditional Art Nouveau buildings.
- House of Five Continents, built in 1901 by architect F. Smet-Verhas.
- On Sculptors Street 22 is a remarkable but often overlooked diamond built by architect G. Van Unen for Leopold Hofkens in 1901.
- On People's Street 40 is the former Self-Help Liberal People's House, designed by Jan Van Asperen and Emiel Van Averbeke in 1901.
- Grand Cafe Horta is a place that combines modern design and real historical elements of a metal frame in the Art Nouveau style.
In the ORTA cafe, I will treat you to a cup of coffee or tea, and you can enjoy the atmosphere of Belgian Art Nouveau from the inside.
