St. Donat's Church

Square Elisabeth, Arlon, Belgium

Description:

The Church of St. Donatus, located in the Belgian city of Arlon on the hill of Knipschen, stands in the part of the hill where in the XI - XVI centuries was the castle of the first Count Arlon Valeran. The church was built of gray stone in the Gothic style in 1626 by Capuchin monks and until 1719 was part of the monastery. It is the only thing left of a medieval complex. The church received its modern name in 1807 after another fire, when it was decided to consecrate it in the name of St. Donatus.

The main attraction of the church complex is the “Rise of St. Donatus” of 14 terraces separated by steps with 14 stone crosses of the same shape, which has been a historical monument since 1992. From the height of the church tower offers a beautiful view of Belgium, Luxembourg and France.
