St. Martin's Cathedral in Arlon

Square Albert 1er 31, Arrondissement of Arlon, Belgium

Description:

St. Martin's Cathedral was built in the early twentieth century. It is located in Albert I Square. There were several temples in Arlon named after St. Martin, but this is the only temple that has survived to our times. According to legend, the temple was erected thanks to King Leopold II, who wished that in two cities of Belgium, Ostend and Arlon, architectural structures striking with their grandeur and beauty were erected.

The architect Van Geluwe worked on the creation of the temple in the neo-Gothic style, and after his death, de Noyet made significant changes to the project.

The height of the main tower is 97 meters, it is undoubtedly visible from afar to all tourists and residents of the city. The top of the tower is crowned by an octagonal arrow and a stone cross. The portals of the building are decorated with the images of Saints Martin, Hubert and Bernard of Clairvaux, as well as Saints Catherine and Sebastian. Left the memory of himself and the architect de Noyet – self-portrait, in sculptural performance, in the form of a stranger with a compass and a scroll in his hand.
