English Monastery of Bruges
Carmersstraat 104, Brugge, Belgium
Description:
The English Monastery in Bruges is located about 1.5 km from the Great Square. The construction of the monastery, founded by monks in 1629, was completed only by 1650. During the Revolution, many monks sought refuge in England, but in 1802 they decided to return to Bruges and their community was named the Monastery of England.
The monastery was restored in the XVIII century. At that time, the area was increased and the facade of the building was changed. Subsequently, a cross-domed church was built, the dome of which was decorated with 4 windows in the form of an oval. The interior of the church is rich, the altar alone was created from 20 types of marble.
Since 1802, the church was closed to visitors, and is still not allowed into the monastery, but ministers can show tourists the Baroque temple. The task of the monastery, as many years ago, is to provide education to immigrants.
