St. Anne's Church

Sint-Annaplein, Brugge

Description:

The Church of St. Anne in Bruges is a monument of European Baroque. The church was built in the XVII century and is rightfully considered the pearl of Bruges. The modest appearance hides one of the most luxurious church interiors in Europe.

The church was built by the municipality of Bruges in 1612 on the site of another chapel of the same name, destroyed at the end of the XVI century by radical Protestants. The gray stones of the exterior cladding of the new temple were taken right on the spot, the medieval masonry gives the building a special expressiveness.

Initially, the church belonged to a poor parish, but over the decades the interior became richer, combining elements of different architectural styles. In the middle of the XIX century, colored stained glass windows were inserted into the windows of the church.

The Church of St. Anne is one of the most interesting architectural sights of the city, combining external conciseness and internal beauty.
