Place de Burgh
Description:
The charming Piazza de Burgh is the historic centre of Bruges. It was here that Count Baudouin I of Flanders began to build a fortress in the X century to protect against the Vikings. Most of the most important and beautiful historical monuments surround this square.
The ancient town hall building with three high towers, decorated with gilded sculptures of Counts and Countess of Flanders, was built in 1376 - 1420. The Gothic temple is the Basilica of the Holy Blood, where an important Christian relic is kept - a fragment of fabric stained with the blood of Christ. The official residence of the Governor of West Flanders is located in the former palace of the Bishop of Bruges, built in 1622. Near the town hall is the Old Civil Registry, built in 1534-1537 in the Renaissance style. It is decorated with bronze sculptures of Moses and Aaron. Since 1883, this building has housed the World Court. The next building is the former premises of the Judicial Chamber, which was built in 1722-1727 in the neoclassical style. Today there is a tourist information center.
Piazza de Burgh is always full of tourists and hosts various cultural events.
